The Triplets
Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin. When hearing these names the only thoughts that should come to mind are hall of fame and three time Super Bowl champions. The picture that I am referring to was taken during the 1993 season when the cowboys were going on to capture their second Super Bowl in 2 years.
The triplets would go on to win 3 Super Bowls together which took Dallas’s Super Bowl total to 5 wins in 8 appearances. They would win every Super Bowl that they appeared in. Also every win was decisive, winning by at least 10 points in every appearance.
Every time I would watch the Cowboys as a young boy I would always look up to the triplets. They were the greatest of their time so of course I had a lot of respect for them. Even though Michael Irvin had a little bit of trouble off the field, I still respected him since he cleaned his act up after many mistakes.
I was born and grew up in Pennsylvania so some might wonder why I was such a fan of the Cowboys. My father was a big Cowboys fan, so naturally I followed his interests. This was probably the main reason I was and am a big Cowboys fan today.
Every member of the Cowboys team was responsible for the excellence they achieved in their period of time together. Some players stood out though as the leaders of the team. They were the 3 players that could take a game in their own hands.
Troy Aikman was a standout QB in college. He started at Oklahoma where he would play for future coach Barry Switzer. Aikman though, would transfer to UCLA where he would go on to win awards and win a bowl each of his 2 years playing for the Bruins. He would finish in second on the all-time passing list for UCLA and was elected to the pro football hall of fame in 2008.
His professional career would start out a little rocky. The Cowboys went 0-11 with Aikman as the starter. This wouldn’t be a sign of things to come though, the next season he would get close to the playoffs, and then the Cowboys would win a playoff game in 1991.
1992 would prove to be a career year for Aikman. He would set career highs in completions, touchdown passes and passing yards. Not only did the Cowboys get to Super Bowl XXVII this year but Aikman won the Super Bowl MVP with 273 passing yards and 4 touchdowns in beating the Buffalo Bills. (“Troy Aikman”)
The following year, the Cowboys would again beat the Buffalo Bills to win Super Bowl XXVIII. Aikman’s final Super Bowl victory would come against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. This would have to be my most cherished super bowl memory, since it was a win over the local and personally hated Steelers, though it would be the Cowboys last Super Bowl victory. Aikman’s career though, would continue until the 2000 season where he experienced his 10th concussion and retired.
The first thing that came to my mind when I would receive a concussion a few years ago was to look to Troy Aikman. He battled through many things and continued to keep playing through a string of injuries. That to me was very inspirational and just showed how much of a class act and man Troy Aikman is.
Michael Irvin is another member of the triplets. He was often times the target for Aikman’s passes and put up big numbers. He would arrive a year earlier than Aikman and was known as “The Playmaker” coming out of college. He was the last first round pick that original owner Tex Schramm made. He was a big inspiration to me, because of his leadership and a never take shit attitude.
Irvin was a big part of the 1991 season where the Cowboys would make the playoffs after facing losing seasons. He had 93 receptions, 1,523 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. He would also get voted into his first of five consecutive pro bowls.
Irvin’s biggest playoff game was against the San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys would lose the game but Irvin had 6 receptions, 192 yards, and 2 touchdowns. The year was 1994 and it was the NFC Championship game.
A year later in 1995 the Cowboys would win Super Bowl XXX. This would be Irvin’s last Super Bowl win. His final game would be played in the 1999 season in the fifth game versus the Philadelphia Eagles. A hit by Tim Hauck sent Irvin head first into the turf and he would remain on the ground until being taken away on a stretcher. It was then revealed to be a spinal cord injury which would end Irvin’s brilliant career. The main thing I remember from this game is the loathsome Eagles fans. The entire home crowd was cheering as Irvin was laying on the ground. That is one of the main reasons why I hate the Eagles to this day.
Emmitt Smith the third member of the triplets, started football at Florida where in his first game he broke the school single game rushing record. He had 224 yards and 2 touchdowns on 39 carries. Even after great college career he dropped until the 17th pick to the Cowboys, due to his small size.
Along with winning 3 Super Bowls with the other triplets, Smith holds many NFL records. He recorded 7 straight 10 rushing touchdown seasons. Also he posted 11 straight one thousand yard seasons. (“Cowboys”)
Emmitt Smith biggest accomplishment though has to be the all time rushing record. He holds the record with 18,355 rushing yards. He broke this record on October 27, 2002. Other records include 164 career rushing touchdowns which is the most among all running backs.
Though Emmitt Smith continued to play after leaving the Cowboys in 2002 he would retire a Cowboy in 2005. He played for the Arizona Cardinals for 3 years with moderate success. He would never be as good as he was after leaving the Cowboys. I was disappointed in Emmitt when he left the Cowboys, but this showed me that sometimes the hardest decision to make is the right one.
Emmitt Smith currently is an announcer for ESPN. Troy Aikman announces games for Fox sports and is recognized as one of the better announcers in the NFL. Michael Irvin used to work for ESPN as an analyst but was fired from the position. He now has his own radio show in the Dallas area.
This picture of the triplets is a very important one for any Cowboys fans that were alive for the early 1990’s. It is a classic example of Cowboys football since they would go on to win 3 Super Bowls. Not since the 70’s have the Cowboys won a Super Bowl, but the team made history years later in winning their fifth Super Bowl.
Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman are currently in the hall of fame. Aikman had an easy time getting in, whereas Irvin had to wait due to past character issues. Emmitt Smith will be eligible for the hall of fame in 2010. He will surely be a first round selection.

Prewriting : In this writing I am trying to give my readers an informative essay. I am using a picture of the triplets and I am giving a history of their play. I will try to inform my reader in this essay.
Postwriting : I think that I gave a good amount of info to my readers about the dallas cowboys. If I had to re-write this than I would try to make it a little more interesting by recalling games more than giving stats.
Revision: In my first draft, I listed a bunch of stats and put them into paragraph form. I never added my personal touch. I kept in a lot of the stats and facts, but I added a personal touch this time. I added experiences I had watching them, and the reasons on why I am and was a Cowboys fan. Also I added how much these 3 players really meant to me.
